Jesus Is The Servant Who Receives One Talent (Matt 25:14-30)

The parable of the master with the three servants who receive different amounts of talents, 5, 2 and 1, is surely a famous and familiar story among the faithful. The one who buries his 1 talent, many faithful believe, deserves the punishment, for, obviously he is a lazy guy, lazy to the extent that he does not even care to walk to a local bank in order to deposit that 1 talent into a saving account, so he would earn the interest from this deposit. Take the note that the master also spells out this laziness during his confrontation with the last servant.

However, recent biblical scholars have reviewed and commenced interpreting this story from different perspectives. They believe that the master is not a righteous person; for he earns his income in an unjust way as it has been illustrated in the story. That is, he gives out 5, 2 and 1 talents to his servants and expects them to double the amount of what is given to them. How these three servants would earn the additional 5, 2, and 1 is obviously not of his concern. This unjust character is revealed through the words of the last servant (Matt 25:24) and interestingly also confirmed by the master himself (Matt 25:26)

Knowing his master’s character, that is, “harvesting where he did not plant and gathering where he did not scatter,” the last servant thus refuses to cooperate with the selfish and greedy master. Being aware that this act will cause him to face a rather negative consequence, still the last servant consciously chooses to bury the master’s 1 talent.

This servant, Biblical scholars believe, is Jesus, who refused to support the unjust social structure and the culture that had constantly oppressed the poor, the widows and the outcast. Due to this conscious choice, Jesus was led to the crucifix quickly after setting his foot on Jerusalem’s soil less than one week. On the “Palm” Sunday he entered the city; on the Friday of the same week he was sentence to death and sent to Golgotha. He was then buried in the tomb just like the 1 talent that is buried.

A pair of Nike shoes is normally manufactured at the labor cost of 2.50 US dollars in Vietnam. However, that same pair of Nike shoes is “amazingly” sold for 250 US dollars or even more when they are placed on a shelf of Nike store in the US. This huge different price is an unjust issue. Jesus himself would surely not to purchase this pair of Nike shoes for himself or his friends. For in buying these Nike shoes, the servant Jesus in the parable no longer buries the 1 talent, but tries his best to earn the additional talent in order to please his selfish and greedy master.

Very often the faithful feel guilty after committing a sexual act. And yet some faithful feel guilty less or do not feel guilty at all after committing sins against justice. Taking away what do not belong to us, showing no self-respect when the employer is not in the office, spreading purposely rumors that terribly damage the reputation of a colleague, bribing someone so I can get promotion in a company, failing to respect the integrity of creation… All these five belong to the justice realm. In performing these acts, I am working for the power of darkness; I am henceforth not equated with the last servant, but the first and second one.

I have a choice! You have a choice!
Let us choose to bury the one talent!
Note: A talent was worth more than fifteen years’ wages of a worker!
