Catholics in Vietnam have recently learned great news from Polish Catholic News Agency KAI that the upcoming Thursday, February 4 will be the Polish National Day of Prayer for persecuted Vietnamese Catholics.

“We cannot remain indifferent,” said Dr. Thomas Atłas, the secretary of the Polish Episcopate for the Missions. “We invite everyone to be involved in our initiative, ‘chain of hearts’, whose aim is to provide spiritual support for the Church in Vietnam and firm opposition to repression and religious persecution, whose expression is the e-mails, letters and calls addressed to the Vietnamese diplomatic mission in our country.”

News on The Polish National Day of Prayer for persecuted Vietnamese Catholics, an initiative of the Polish Bishops' Commission for Missions and of Polish Redemptorist Province, “has spread quickly in Hanoi,” observed Fr. Joseph Nguyen from the Vietnam capital.

“It’s so joyful and emotional to hear such good things happening in our time of trials and tribulation, ” he added.

Fr. Van Chi Chu, spokesperson of The Federation of Vietnamese Catholic Mass Media, warmly praised the initiative of Polish brothers and sisters in Christ.

“This precious, innovative idea of the Missionary Committee of the Polish Episcopal Council is a great source of encouragement, and comfort for the Church in Vietnam and our country in general,” he said.

“Fervent prayer is the answer for brutal violence,” he added noting that Vietnamese Catholics around the world have launched a campaign of “Exult the Cross of Christ as the instrument of our salvation”. “The Adoration of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross,” said Fr. Van Chi, “is the answer for the act of sacrilege of demolition of the crucifix at Dong Chiem parish.”

The campaign of “Exult the Cross of Christ” has started sometime after the demolition of the Dong Chiem crucifix in Vinh diocese and is spreading quickly inside Vietnam. In the photo, thousands of Catholics packed the church at Yen Hoa in the diocese of Vinh on Jan. 30 for the adoration of Cross and a special Mass to pray for Dong Chiem parish. It has been proven to be a great success as many Vietnamese Catholic congregations throughout the country and abroad have joined the chorus to exult the crucifix, a positive result coming out of Dong Chiem incident.
